Let’s be honest here, “Making money online” gets a bad rap. If you told someone on the street that you “Make money online”, they’d probably assume one of two things about you:

You quit your job and you’ll be experiencing big regrets in 2-6 months when your savings run out and you’ve got nothing to show for it as they think making money online doesn’t work.
You’re a sleazy, tech savvy con artist who swindles people out of their money while sipping lattes in Starbucks as they think it works but it necessarily involves pestering or tricking people.

So, why does it get such a bad rap? One good reason is that there’s a lot of dead ends on the internet and so lots of people have had bad experiences trying to make money online. Does that mean it doesn’t work? No, it just means it’s not easy. You have to know what to look for and what to avoid. For e.g. You’ll never make serious money doing little tasks for other people. It could be filling out surveys, doing testing for other people, performing odd jobs and there’s a host of sites that pay you or pair you with people who will pay you to do little tasks including Swagbucks, InboxDollars and Fiverr. They’re not conning you or tricking you but if you’re looking for a serious income online, start looking somewhere else.

Other people try to make it by doing freelance writing work. It’s definitely a better route but still really hard to make a living. Then there’s the ultimate no-no which is scanning forums for revolutionary secret methods and magical systems. Trying to sneak your way into online riches without working for it. That will never work because riches have always and will always require hard work. Always. It doesn’t matter if it’s online or offline.

When it comes to making money online, the question is not whether you’ll have to work hard, you’re gonna have to. That should be a given. The question is how and where you should apply your effort. Making money online is a serious enterprise. It’s not a joke, it takes time to learn and time to grow.

Charles Darwin is one of history’s greatest scientists. So, what made him so great? One of his discoveries about how living things change over time and interestingly, the discovery has profound implications for business. Darwin observed that all living things are in a big “struggle for existence.” There’s limited space, limited water and limited food in the world. So, all living things have to compete against each other for other resources. Only the strongest survive in this struggle.

So, who are the strongest? Those with some sort of competitive advantage. Some animals are born with traits which put them at an advantage over others of their kind. Over time, since these creatures who are the ones with special traits are more capable of surviving, nature selects them and kills off the rest. Then one of their descendants is born with a special trait and the cycle goes on. The strongest keep on winning and the weak keep on dying.

So, where’s the secret to business insight in all of this? The secret to survival in the unforgiving, dog eats dog world of business is differentiation. If you want to survive and thrive, you need to find a way to be different from your competition. Just trying harder won’t do. It’s not the deer or the hawks or the bugs who try harder that survive. It’s the ones who are different. The ones who have some advantage built into their genes.
