You’ve probably seen the picture of George Washington crossing the Delaware River.  The wind is blowing.  He has an army behind him.  He’s got his leg propped up on the boat like a conqueror.  He looks like the most bad ass person of all time but that wasn’t Washington’s most daring move and not by a long shot.

In Washington’s time, disease killed more soldiers than all the bullets and cannonballs in the world.  Infections like smallpox spread quickly in camps and could take out a whole army before they even went to battle.  In the winter of 1778, just before he crossed the Delaware, Washington decided he’d had enough of smallpox.

So, he had his entire army inoculated.  He exposed every one of his men to smallpox so they would build up an immunity but he had no idea if it would work or wipe out every soldier he had.  Plus, if the British found out that his entire army was sick with Smallpox, they could attack and crush the weak soldiers but it did work and Washington won the war and founded America.

When Tony Iommi was 17, he lost the tips of his middle and ring finger on his right hand but it wasn’t just physically painful for Iommi because when he lost tips of his fingers, his dreams were crushed.  At the time, Iommi was looking for a way to avoid a boring desk job.  He hoped that he could make a living from his guitar but when he lost the tips of his fingers, it looked like his dream was lost too.

Iommi found a way to keep playing.  He put two thimble like medal caps where the tips of his fingers used to be and tuned his guitar so that they could bend the strings easier which made the guitar sound lower.  This led to his band (Black Sabbath) having a unique sound.  Their sound was so unique that other bands started copying it which eventually led to the birth of heavy metal.  His injury should’ve stopped him from playing but he found a way to turn his injury into an asset.

Now you can do the same thing with that bad taste that working a desk leaves in your mouth.  You know, that feeling that tells you that you’re wasting your time sitting behind a desk and makes going to work miserable.  That feeling that stops you from putting all your effort into your desk job.

Why You Shouldn’t Follow Your Dreams

In 2013, Gallup polled American workers and found that for every one worker engaged in their work, there were two that were “Actively disengaged.”  All throughout my childhood, I was told to follow my dreams.  Then I grew up and figured out what I wanted to do but like everyone who tries to follow their dreams, I hit some roadblocks.

This is how people end working a job they never imagined and doing something they don’t enjoy.  Those dreams that people say to follow all your life were out of reach to everyone except a few people who got lucky or knew the right people.  This leads to being actively disengaged, feeling mad, disappointed and feeling like being lied to.  The worst part is seeing ads and emails that tell you to quit your job and follow your dreams.

Ads that told me how this person quit their job and now they’d doubled their income and cut their workload in half or how they got to travel the world while they worked.  They were the lucky few and I was with everyone else.  I thought about the lucky people who the ads told me about and I realised the reason that they were so lucky was because the rest of us either stopped following our dreams when the going got tough and were too happy with wallowing in our misery to try again.

The only reason those people were able to earn livings so good that their company’s bragged about them was because the rest of us were so busy with being actively disengaged with our jobs that they were the only ones left.  99% of us quit at the first signs of trouble leaving the 1% who could cut it, the best jobs.
