What A French Philosopher Teaches Us About Online Success?

Do you know who invented the world’s first calculator?  The guy’s name was Blaise Pascal.  Do you know why he invented the calculator?  It starts in France in the early 1600’s.  When he was just 16, Pascal wrote a paper that revolutionised the study of mathematics.

The paper was so good that the leading mathematicians of the day didn’t believe he wrote it.  They insisted that his father had written it.  That’s the kind of guy he was.  He was smart.  His father, Etienne Pascal was in charge of collecting and recording all the tax payments in one of Europe’s best cities at the time.  It was quite the job.

Why You’ll Drown Too Without A Coach?

I used to hate fire drills until I heard about The SS Morro Castle.  Almost a hundred years ago The SS Morro Castle which is a luxury ocean linear carrying 540 passengers was speeding towards New York.  Passengers were uneasy and with good reason as The Morro was sailing straight into a hurricane.  To make matters worse, it had just been announced that the captain had died of a heart attack earlier that day.  Certainly not what you want to hear when you’re headed into a hurricane.

Thankfully, The Morro was prepared for anything.  The Titanic had sunk just 20 years earlier and as a result ships were required to carry lots of safety equipment.  The Morro was no exception.  It had enough life boats to carry 4 times it’s passenger load.

At 2:50am almost every one was asleep.  Then the fire alarms went off.  What had started as a small fire in a storage closet was quickly turning into a raging disaster.  Within 20 minutes, the whole ship was in flames.  The biggest problem was that no one knew what to do.

While the regulations had been requiring ships to carry life-boats and flotation devices, no regulations had been made requiring ships to show it’s passengers what to do in the case of an emergency.  Even the crew members didn’t know what to do.  It resulted in chaos.

It wasn’t long before most of The Morro’s passengers were trapped on the side of the ship where there were no life boats.  People had scrambled onto the deck without grabbing their life-vests.  Eventually, the passengers were left with no choice.

So, they jumped into the hurricane without floatation devices.  In the end, 137 people died.  Even though The Morro had the tools to save everyone, it had not provided the training needed to effectively use those tools.  You can have the sharpest, shiniest tools in the world but if you don’t know how to use the tools, what’s the point?

Electric Guitars And Your Online Empire?

One common excuse for not starting your own business is: “I don’t know anything about selling online.”  Well the thing is, knowing something about online selling might actually hurt you.  Take Leo Fender as an example.  He’s the founder of Fender guitars.  His guitars are played by just about every famous rock and country musician you’ve ever heard of including:

  • Jimi Hendrix
  • Eric Clapton
  • Keith Richard

It goes on and on.  In fact, most electric guitar players play either a Fender or a Gibson.  Unlike Gibson’s designers, Les Paul, Leo Fender didn’t know anything about playing guitar.  Les Paul is one of the great jazz and pop guitar players of all time.  He invented the solid body guitar which was later sold by Gibson.  It makes sense that a player would develop a guitar, right?  They know what they need and they have experience.

Even though Paul was a player, he wasn’t the perfect guy to develop a guitar.  His design sounded and looked amazing.  The Les Paul is a beautiful instrument.  It’s one piece of carved wood and it’s expensive to make.  Not perfect by any means and only the rich guys could afford the Les Paul.

About the same time, an electrician who never played guitar, Leo Fender was hanging out with guitar players who bought his amplifiers.  These guys were working guitar players.  It was guys who were trying to make a living.  He watched these fellas play.  He asked them questions.  He found out what they needed.  He tried different designs and had the players give him feedback.

From all this curiosity and tinkering Leo found the winning formula.  A guy who never played guitar developed a less-expensive to manufacture solid body guitar that was exactly what the players wanted.  The Broadcaster and was later renamed The Telecaster.  It was a huge hit.  Players still play the same basic design about 60 years later.
