I think the number one reason more people aren’t in the online business industry is that they don’t understand what a passive income stream is.  Lucky you, you’re about to read a story about what it is.

Making passive income is like babysitting:

“Okay Jenny, Mr. Wright and I are heading out.  Kids are upstairs, sleeping.  Feel free to put on a movie, do some homework, or anything you’d like and we’ll be back by 11:00.”

“Are you sure there’s nothing more I can do?  You’re paying me $12 an hour for each of your boys and that’s $24 an hour.  Surely, I could clean your kitchen or something?”

“No, no, that’s quite alright.  Only, I’ve just now thought of it.  Christina called me this morning and said she couldn’t find a sitter.”

“That makes sense.  Tonight’s the homecoming game and most kids my age are either playing in it or cheering at it.”

“Well, we have a spare room upstairs. Would you mind if her three girls came over and crashed for a few hours?”

“It’s all the same to me, I suppose.  If I’m just here watching a movie, three more kids is no real difference.  Heck, I could ‘watch’ even more than that.”

“Oh, I’m so glad you said that because Erin just texted me to ask if her Siamese triplets could also spend the night but don’t worry, she’ll pay you for all three individually.”

“But Mrs. Wright, supervising eight sleeping kids is no more work than supervising two.  Wha–?”

“Good, so we’re agreed.  Eight kids… $12 an hour for four hours.  When I get back tonight I’ll write you a check for $384.”

Dumbfounded, Jenny flicked on the movie and thought to herself, “You know, maybe I will spring for extra toppings and cinnamon sticks this time.”

The Education Theory Is A Load Of Crock

What’s your learning style?  According to the bald-heads whose job is to make up: “Theories of education”, these are the big three:

  1. Auditory (hearing)
  2. Visual (seeing)
  3. Kinaesthetic (You’d rather play games than do homework)
  4. Gurus will try to sell you their podcasts and seminars (auditory)
  5. Others will try to sell you their books (visual)
  6. The worst of them will make you jump through all sorts of hoops (kinaesthetic)

If Only The Music Industry Were As Lucrative As Online Business

One of the main reasons the: “Self-employed” sector has yet to overtake the more traditional sectors in employment is that not everyone understands the concept of a passive income stream.

So here’s another parable about passive income:

Holly’s third birthday present was a toy guitar bigger than her little body and for the last 19 years, she’s never wanted anything more than to tour the country as a singer/songwriter.  Problem is, music is a tough industry and it often seems impossible to make enough money to sustain a healthy lifestyle as a touring musician.

So she shelved her dreams.  That is, until she got the most spine-tingling email of her life: “Hello, Holly!  I just found one of your recordings on YouTube. Great stuff!  My name is Jordan and I manage three great bands: one in LA, one in New York and a third in Chicago. They’ve been looking for a headlining act to open for and we’d love for you to be that act.  I realize that, living in three different major cities, it would be pretty tricky to coordinate a tour, so how about this for a compromise: Let us open for you once, bring all of our fan bases, and give you 100% of ticket and merch sales.

In return, they’d like to continue touring only, they’d like permission to cover your songs. Of course, you’ll get 60% of ticket and merch sales from all concerts and 75% from all album downloads.  If this isn’t already too much—they’d like to play only your music.  So, wherever and whenever they play, you’ll make most of the money.  Do we have a deal?”

Holly, flabbergasted, accepted.  Now, she was free to play not out of fear, twisting her songs to make money but as a true artist: out of the overflow of her personality.

The Biggest Struggle In Adulthood

It’s time to turn back the clock to high school because I’m about to tell you a story from the odyssey.  Don’t worry my version is a lot shorter.  Before we get to Odysseus tricking the Cyclops, resisting the sirens and bursting home to ravage the suitors and enjoy his wife, there’s another hero: His son, Telemachos.

Telemachos doesn’t start out like a hero.  He mopes around at home while a horde of piggish men gobble up his dad’s food, guzzle down his dad’s wine and make daily passes on his mom.  The gods know that something’s gotta give.  So, Athena flits down, disguises herself as ‘Mentor’ and tell Telemachos off: “You should not go on clinging to your childhood.  You are no longer of an age to do that.”  Her words, though harsh, fill his heart with courage and he feels “fathered” by her.
