The Lifestyle You Want In 5 Steps

If you need a clear path to follow, Ray Dalio is one of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs and investors.  His new book, Principles, is being touted as the best business book of the year.  I wanted to share one powerful idea in the book if that’s cool with you.

He calls it his 5 step process to get what you want out of life.  Here they are.  After, we’ll riff on one of them:

  1. Have clear goals
  2. Identify you don’t tolerate the problems that stand in the way of you achieving those goals
  3. Accurately diagnose the problems to get at their root causes
  4. Design plans that will get you around them
  5. Do what’s necessary to push these designs through to results

Nice right?  Lots of powerful nuances in each step that makes this truly effective to get anything you want out of life.  He describes these as a loop that propels you towards a path that will get you results.  Now, he goes into deep detail on each step in his book.  Like point 1, have clear goals.  He says you can have virtually anything you want, yet you can’t have everything you want.

So, you must prioritize.  Rejecting some things you want in order to get other things you want or need even more.  Another point, don’t confuse goals with desires.  A goal may be to get in good physical health while you desire is to eat potato chips and chocolate cookies but that desire would lead to you being a couch potato and not the physically fit person you want to be, right?

So, you’d want to avoid the chips and cookies.  The point?  We must decide what we want by reconciling our goals and desires.  Good stuff?
