Three Reasons Why Small Business Owners Love January

The best time to buy a car is late summer/early fall, right when the new model comes out.  The best time to go to Hawaii is in winter.  Our winter is their summer so you get two swimmers in one year but far and away, December is the best time to start a small business.

Here are my top three reasons:

  • When people make new year’s resolutions, they’re more likely than ever to try new things.  This also means buying new products and every marketer knows this.
  • Psychologists say that it’s just after the holidays that people’s new found benevolence and desire for family point them toward small businesses.
  • Although retail sales go through the roof before Christmas, businesses push more gifts than tools for self actualisation.  People are more inclined to put their holiday bonuses toward those things in January.

We both know you have wanted to start your own business but it’s never been the right time and maybe it hasn’t been but today is the day.  Just between you and me, I don’t want you to miss out on January windfalls. It’s really the best time of the year.

I Want To Teach You The Science Of Marketing

You know marketing is a science, right?  That means there is a right way and a wrong to do it.  The funny thing is, from the outside, not many people realise it.  People believe so many marketing myths that I don’t have time to bust ’em all in one blog post.

People think that marketing is about deception.  As if consumers are stupid and can’t test your claims for themselves.

It is for people who are naturally creative and funny people.  Ironically, their self-confidence and unwillingness to follow time tested principles makes them some of the least effective marketers.

You’ve gotta become someone you’re not.  This is not sustainable in the long term and the in authenticity doesn’t even work in the short term.

Some of the half truths are even harder to bust.

Marketing is not primarily about confidence.  It’s about humility.

It’s not primarily about hard work.  We’ve seen so many hard workers burn out because of frustration.  You can try all day but it’s hard to make roosters lay eggs and get bulls to make milk.

Marketing is about doing what it takes and we teach what it takes.  If you’re some free-wheeling jock or nerd with a business plan and an idea for a funny commercial, this might not be the opportunity for you.

This Rabbi’s Business Advice Is Over 2,000 Years Old

Hanukah which is the Jewish festival of lights is an annual reminder of abundance.  In the early winter, families and friends gather around a menorah each night to light candles and chant blessings to commemorate the small miracles.

Rabi Jonathan Feldman explains: “We celebrate light, the nonmaterial… Abundance comes from above.”  The Hanukah miracle is an example of abundance mindset: “Living with a sense of plenty makes us more rich, materially and spiritually.”

Stephen Covey made the abundance mindset more popular in his book, The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People.  When you believe there’s enough in the world for everyone, you’re more likely to pursue your desires, take risks and become a source of material (and internal) well-being, yourself.

Those who lack the abundance mindset doom themselves to remain in their burdensome work and life situations.  They sit in pig sties and keep telling themselves, it doesn’t smell.  Others of us choose to take control and move forward.

Holiday Marketing Gave Me Mixed Feelings Until This Happened

Do you ever get sick of marketing during the holiday season?  I have mixed feelings.  The worst part for me was having my eyes and ears bombarded with things I knew I wanted to get and give but also knew I couldn’t afford.

Do these things ever bother you?

  • The necklace with your wife’s favourite stone that you just don’t have budget room for?
  • A total surprise trip to Disneyland for your family?
  • The power tool you need to kick-start your new life as a DIY-er?
Being a Christmas-time consumer has usually added a layer of frustration to what should have been a purely hopeful and uplifting season but you know that’s not the only way people experience the holidays.
Do you ever wonder what it’s like to be on the other side?  It takes all the frustration out of the holidays when you’re the seller and not just the buyer.  I can afford what I want and enjoy a holiday season safe from ads.

Stop Dreaming Of a White Christmas

Stop dreaming of a white Christmas.  In fact, it’s kind of a mantra for all of us this holiday season.  Stop dreaming of a white Christmas, get out and have one:

  • Don’t you wish you had just a few more days off work to enjoy the holidays with your loved ones?
  • Enough budget space to steal away to a warm resort in ski country?
  • The chance to teach your kids to fall off a snowboard?

I remember being there before MTTB and I’m greatful to be where I am today with other people who say, we’re not dreamers, we’re doers.
